Find school closings, delays and early dismissals

School Closings Report is a public information dashboard built to help families, students and communities find current school schedule changes quickly. Instead of making visitors search through long weather articles or social posts, our goal is to put the most useful information first: which school system is affected, what type of schedule change has been announced, when the information was updated and where the announcement came from.

School schedules can change because of snow, ice, flooding, severe storms, utility failures, transportation problems, emergencies and other local conditions. A forecast by itself does not confirm that a school will close. Decisions are made by the responsible school system or other authorized officials, which is why this site follows an official-source-first approach.

How School Closings Report works

1. Verify the source

We look for official statewide systems, school districts and other authoritative public-school announcement sources before adding live coverage.

2. Show the current status

When available, announcements are organized into clear statuses such as closed, delayed or early dismissal so visitors can scan updates quickly.

3. Show update information

Live pages display source and update information so readers can understand how recent the available announcement is.

What school status terms mean

Closed generally means normal in-person classes are canceled for the affected school or school system for the stated period. Delayed means the school day is expected to begin later than the normal schedule; the exact delay can vary by district. Early dismissal means students may be released before the normal end of the school day. Some districts may also announce remote-learning or other alternative schedules. Always follow the exact wording provided by your school system because procedures differ by location.

Today and tomorrow school closing information

Most visitors need an answer for today, but announcements can also be issued in advance for the following school day. During major weather events, districts may make decisions the evening before; in other situations, a decision may not be announced until early morning. This is why timestamps matter. An older announcement should not automatically be treated as the current status for a new school day.

When there is no active announcement, that does not necessarily guarantee that every school will operate normally. It means the source we are displaying has no active closing or delay announcement at that time. Families should still check their own district's official communication channels when conditions are changing quickly.

Current coverage

West Virginia school closings and delays are our first live statewide coverage because West Virginia provides an official automated public-school closing feed. The feed can report county-wide announcements and announcements affecting individual public schools. We cache the official data on our site and refresh it automatically rather than making every visitor contact the government server directly.

All 50 state pages are now available in our directory, while live publishing and search indexing are activated state-by-state only after we identify a dependable source and can present the information accurately. Our long-term goal is national coverage, but useful and verifiable information is more important than publishing hundreds of empty state or district pages.

Why official announcements matter

Weather websites can tell you that snow, ice or severe weather is possible. They cannot make a school-closing decision. Two nearby districts can make different decisions because road conditions, transportation routes, building conditions and local policies differ. School Closings Report therefore does not label a school “closed” simply because a forecast looks dangerous.

For urgent decisions involving transportation, childcare, work schedules or student safety, use this site as a quick information dashboard and confirm the final instruction with your school district or school. Official district calls, texts, emails and websites remain the final authority for individual families.

Frequently asked questions

How often are live results updated?

Update frequency depends on the source. Our West Virginia feed is cached for approximately five minutes. On WordPress, scheduled background tasks can run later on very low-traffic sites, so the displayed source timestamp should always be checked.

Does “no closings reported” mean my school is definitely open?

No. It means there is no active announcement in the source currently displayed. A district may publish a new decision later or communicate through another official channel.

Do you predict school closings from weather?

No. Weather may be useful context, but we do not treat a forecast as a confirmed closing. A closing or delay should be tied to an actual announcement from an authorized source.

Are private schools and colleges included?

Coverage depends on the source. The current West Virginia RSS source is for public-school information and specifically does not provide private-school, college, university or bus announcements.
